Teacher story by: Hans Essers

“Students learn efficiently with LabBuddy and peer guidance by accessing structured tools, shared experiences, and practical insights from past learners. “
Maastricht University; Department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences; 3D Gait Cycle Analysis

The challenge

Students should be able to independently perform a 3D Gait Cycle Analysis, which includes 1) identifying anatomical landmarks and analyzing and interpreting 2) kinematics, 3) kinetics, and 4) muscle activity with respect to literature. The accompanying individual lab training session should require minimum supervision.

The transformation

The basic laboratory manual was molded and extended into the LabBuddy workflow with preparatory questions and feedback. Various actions during a 3D Gait Cycle Analysis occur in parallel and need to be repeated, which was handled nicely as respective connections between workflow blocks.

The final result

LabBuddy’s interactive approach of setting up the workflow and different styles of questions and feedback allowed students to more effectively understand the process and connections between experimental choices and 3D Gait Cycle Analysis outcomes. As a result, students were able to supervise new students effectively.

Webinar: Enhancing lab education with LabBuddy

Following the inspiring Present-day Practicals Webinar Series, we’re hosting a dedicated LabBuddy webinar. LabBuddy provides an e-learning solution to support students in preparing before the start of the practical work, while working in the lab, and to guide them during the processing of their results after the practical work. During this session, Lukas Lätsch from ETH Zurich and Lauren Deneyer from EhB (Brussels) will share their experiences.
