The challenge

The Benzoin Lab. An open-ended practical in which students investigate the benzoin reaction with their own choice of starting materials. This practical can easily give negative results, requiring students to think on their feet and adapt to unexpected outcomes.

The transformation

A blended learning approach including LabBuddy’s e-learning activity in which students are guided through the design of their own experiment, taking into account different possible outcomes.

The final result

Happy, confident students who are much better prepared for the practical and who ask “should I do…?” rather than “what do I do?”. Excellent feedback from staff and students with the integration of LabBuddy into our lab education!
