The challenge

We needed to transform a traditional plant anatomy microscopy lab on secondary growth into a digital, self-guided format. The goals were to increase student motivation through varied teaching methods and to add flexibility when on-site lab sessions were not possible.

The transformation

Using LabBuddy, light microscopy was replaced by interactive digital cross-sections where students identified cell types. Content was structured as a mindmap, allowing students to choose their learning path while progressing from macroscopic images to microscopic and schematic views, supported by gradually deepened theory.

The final result

The digital lab reduced assistant workload, enabled continuous monitoring and provided targeted feedback. Students were required to complete all steps, ensuring deep learning. Motivation increased markedly, and students appreciated the autonomy, structure and variation offered by this innovative, flexible lab format.
